“For me, the show started to cohere into its distinct but related twin poles when I saw Michael Valiquette’s piece Orange Hair and Letitia Quesenberry’s Somewhere so High. The up-close almost microscopic view of Valiquette’s subject’s hair, with its saturated summer light and not-quite-naturalistic color, juxtaposed with Quesenberry’s very specific, very polished ethereal glow–for me it was the first soft-serve cone of summer. Watermelon on the beach, sunscreen at the pool. Smooth and grainy and exciting but forlorn–layers of experience. It was all there. Other works just fell into place after that–moving swiftly between figuration and abstraction, close up and far away. The textures of a season started to emerge, the hilarity of a cabbage made into a face–something about that felt drunken. This is summer in all its aspects. Time going by too slow then too fast, the beach, long nights and late mornings.”
