Absolutely in love with self-taught Czech Republic-based painter Vojtěch Kovařík’s brutal, almost grotesque muscle men!
Can you tell me a little bit about you?
I was born in Valasske Mezirici in Czech Republic. Now I study in my 5th year on Faculty of Arts of the Ostrava University, in the Department of Drawing. But I am not a typical student; I just paint in school and use it like an atelier [studio] and that’s all 🙂
When did you first discover art, or realize you wanted to make it yourself?
From birth, because my parents are artists and pushed me toward art.
What is your process like?
I work really fast – so that’s why I work mainly with acrylic colors. I don’t make often sketches; I work directly on canvas (al a prima).
Do you have a mentor, or a piece of advice (or both), which has influenced your practice?
No, and actually I never studied painting. So for me it’s important to learn these things by myself, and discover “paint-approaches” to express myself without any advices by academic profs.
What is your studio like?
I still use the school atelier, but I am now working with my father on my new atelier, which (I hope) will be soon!
What are three words you would use to describe your work?
Figure, painting, monumental work
What are you working on right now?
I am now preparing an exhibition in OFF/FORMAT Gallery which is situated in Brno city (CZ). The opening is at the end of May and then I will go to relax in Cyprus! I’m in Ostrava City (Czech Republic).
Anything else you would like to add?
Yeah, I love the yngspc page!
