Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
I am originally from Japan, NY-based artist.
I am currently a MFA student at City College of New York.
Within my artistic practice, drawing plays a central role. I often utilize the
techniques of sewing fabrics with a machine; it has become my
drawing tools. When I sew, my body motions are
similar to the motions I use when I draw. The stitching
appears as if they are contour lines.
When did you first discover art, or realize you wanted to make it yourself?
I have always had a thing for art. I’ ve been doing since I was very young. I also love to read and write poetry, but art is the best way to express my inner emotions.
What is your process like?
Based on my own personal emotional response,
I create my work by constructing, deconstructing, and reconstructing an image through the use of fabric and pigments. Mostly use pigments such as threads, acrylic, oil pastel, and charcoal.
I usually take a month to complete my piece.
I sometimes work on 2 pieces at one time when I have a clear image of completed work.
Do you have a mentor, or a piece of advice (or both), which has influenced your practice?
At this point, my professors’ advice help me to develop my work. At the same time, even some people around me criticize my works so badly still these negative comments help me to develop and motivate me a lot.
What is your studio like?
What do you find most challenging, challenging, or frustrating about pursuing art?: To assure myself of the ability to have financial resources for studio space and income.
If you could sit down for dinner or a drink with anyone, who would it be and what would you chat about
Artist, Saul Fletcher.
I would like to ask him what motivates him to do art and about the view of his quiet world.
And at the end, I would like to ask him if we could be friend.
What are three words you would use to describe your work?
Oscillating, darkness, and angst
What do you do when you find yourself in a creative rut?
To get inspiration, see my favorite old masters’ works, see lyrics of my favorites’ songs,
listen to old songs that recall past memories to my mind.
What do you love most about your medium? What challenges or surprises you most about it?
Oil pastels and charcoal.
I always start my work with drawing by using these tools.
They are controllable, have ability to draw various contours such as thick, thin, strong, soft, light and dark.
These tools help me to express my emotional response on my piece.
I also use a sewing machine as drawing tool, but it often cannot follow my fast emotional motions, then stops working. The Patience Challenge.
What do you need or value most as an artist?
The ability to provide an opportunity through art that I believe it as a powerful tool to communicate an emotional response between viewers and me.
What keeps you creating?
The moment when I recognize my existence, then I can value my existence.
What are you working on right now?
Abusing memory
