YS: You are currently living in Tbisili, Georgia. Are you from there originally?
RK: I am originally Georgian, but I was born in Russia and my family moved back to Georgia in 1992 when I was 13.
When did you first become interested in painting?
When I was 9 years old I went to the art school , after finishing an art school I went to the Art College and after State Academy of Art, so I haven’t changed my way from childhood when I started to express myself thru colors and lines. I can say that I always knew what I wanted to become.
What or who has influenced you the most?
I can definitely say that I am crazy of any kind art, every day I look at the art works in internet, in galleries ,in museums , I am having influences from books, good films, music , interesting people etc etc etc
What is your process like? How do you get started on a painting?
Firstly I make some kind of abstraction, I mix different colors on the canvas , it makes me wonder what could appear next and then I start to tell a story by paints. I love this narrative way of art.
What is your studio like? How much time do you spend there?
I haven’t had a studio until this year, I worked at home and it was really difficult for me. But last year I have got a small apartment, with only two rooms in the old part of Tbilisi and renovated it in studio .I moved there in the beginning of this year .I start to produce from 12 am until 12 pm , this is my regular work day.
What do you enjoy most about being an artist?
The main thing I love and adore in my profession is that as an artist I can express myself as much as I like to. I can talk to people on my language and not be afraid that somebody can’t understand me. I like the fact that I can communicate with others in real world without going out from my own imagination.
What do you find most challenging about working as an artist?
The most challenging thing in being artist is that in my country we have to work nonstop to foothold in an artist world. Unfortunately we don’t have any platform or any base in Georgia to work as an artist. After finishing any art school or an academy, artist has to work too much just for staying alive.
If you could give a piece of advice to a young art student just starting a program, what would it be?
Young artists always should be in touch with artistic world’s trends, they should go to galleries, to theaters , to cinemas , they can have an influence from everything. The main thing is that they should never give up.
Do you have any upcoming exhibitions or projects that I can mention?
I have just arrived from London, where I took a part in The Other Art Fair, which was a great experience. At this moment my works are in Stockholm’s Affordable Art Fair and on another fair in Nice. In 8th of November is an opening of an exhibition in Netherlands , where will exhibited my 8 works. In 3th of November I’m going in Jordan for an International Art Festival.
