Mission
To promote, support, and collaborate with emerging contemporary artists, encourage transparency, and to engage artists, students, and the community in meaningful dialogue through unique content and projects.
History + Concept
Young Space (yngspc) is an independent, itinerant, online-offline contemporary art platform emphasizing early career and emerging artists. Part curatorial project, part itinerant gallery, part publication, the platform is a constantly evolving initiative that expands and reconfigures in response to collaboration, participation, and the changing times. Young Space is run solely by Kate Mothes, and emphasizes new and exciting work by early-career and emerging artists by presenting virtual and physical exhibitions. Exhibitions are coordinated nationally and internationally, in collaboration with artists and spaces. One consistent aim is to collaborate with artists, gallerists and dealers, curators, and other arts professionals in order to position Young Space as a conduit or facilitator for artists entering the art world, and as a source for the art world to discover up-and-coming talent.
Young Space began in Spring 2014 in the form of a blog. In Fall 2015, the Young Space Instagram account began to grow exponentially, leading to a number of experimental temporary exhibitions around the US in collaboration with artists and galleries, such as Settling the Ghost (Hortonville, WI in 2017) or Conveyor (Brooklyn, NY in 2018). Young Space’s blog format eventually morphed into an ongoing series of interviews with early-career and emerging artists from around the world, encompassing several hundred interviews which now comprise the Artists Archive.
In July 2020, in collaboration with Montreal, QC-based artist and designer Vickie Vainionpaa, Young Space launched a new print and online publication, Dovetail Magazine, which positions contemporary visual art in dialogue with design, architecture, photography, travel, and global visual culture.
